Day 17: Puerto Montt

A visit to the Lake Llanquihue towns of Frutillar and Puerto Varas in the morning. The afternoon spent sailing on the final leg of the trip.

Sunday 17th March 2024

Because we only had a morning in Puerto Montt, we had to choose between a trip to the Petrohue Falls, which involved a long drive from the port, thus limiting time at the falls, or a shorter drive to the two towns on the edge of Lake Llanquihue.

The visit to the falls was tempting, being quite close to the Osorno volcano (see map below) and with what promised to be a very scenic drive along the southern shore of Lake Llanquihue.

The shorter trip to Frutillar and Puerto Varas won, however. There was also the prospect of seeing Osorno and some other smaller volcanoes across the lake.

It was a very early start to the day, so Geoff decided to stay on the ship.

The landing jetty serves all international passengers, whether they are tendering in from the big ships, or on zodiacs from small ships like ours.

The coaches, along with drivers and guides, were ready and waiting for us.

We were given tourist maps. It looked like we could easily have spent an interesting couple of days here, rather than trying to squeeze in a visit in a morning.

Our first stop was at the lovely little lakeside town/village of Frutillar, where there was a definite musical theme going on!

We enjoyed a very pleasant stroll along the lake's edge.

Sadly, there were no views of the Osorno volcano or the other smaller volcanoes across the lake today, but here is what we could have been seeing!

Leaving Frutillar, we took a very scenic drive towards Puerto Varas...

...driving through the town of Llanquihue.

Our second and final stop was here at Puerto Varas.

Members of the expedition team were awaiting us at the cruise terminal and ready to take us back to the ship.

Soon after everybody had arrived back on the ship, the anchor was taken up and the ship sailed. Before long, we sailed through the Chacao Channel.
