Day 13: Morning cruising, afternoon in Puerto Edén

A morning of scenic cruising, followed by an afternoon visit to the village of Puerto Edén, home to the Kawésqar people.

Wednesday 13th March 2024
A rainy morning as we continued sailing north, but the ever-changing landscape kept us interested.

Just before lunch we approached the small village of Puerto Edén. We hoped that the rain would hold off long enough for us to be able to go ashore and not get too wet.

Having been on the ship for the whole day yesterday, we decided to go ashore despite the weather. Afterwards, we were so pleased that we had. The place had beautiful birds and plants in abundance and we really enjoyed the stroll.

Once we were all back on back, the anchor was taken up and we began sailing towards the "English Narrows".

The rain dried up and we were treated to some gorgeous shafts of sunshine in the early evening.

Before dinner, we sailed around the wreck of a freighter, the MV Captain Leonidas, which ran aground on the Bajo Cotopaxi (Cotopaxi Bank) in 1968.

At a pre-dinner briefing, we were given the news that our schedule was to be changed and that instead of sailing directly out of the fjords and into the Gulf of Penas, severe weather in the Pacific was going to force us to spend another day within the shelter provided by the fjords. More about that tomorrow.
