Day 8: The incredible Pia Glacier
|
|
A morning spent Zodiac cruising
near the Pia Glacier
and later sailing out of the Pia Glacier fjord.

|
|
|
A very early announcement
by our expedition leader, Mike, urged us to go out on deck
to witness the beautiful sunrise as we were entering the
Pia Glacier fjord. Bruce was in the shower and missed most
of it, but Geoff saw it all and took some amazing photos. |

We were only going to
spend a short time cruising in the Pia Fjord before sailing
out and into the larger Garibaldi Fjord. Plans were changed
at short notice when the expedition team got news that a
large cruise ship had beaten us to it and didn't think it
would be a good idea for us to share the fjord with many
others. The decision was therefore taken to lower the zodiacs
and spend our time here today instead. It was a good decision. |

The weather was a bit
cold and the water wasn't completely calm. Geoff decided
to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of the ship, but Bruce
couldn't resist a ride in a zodiac. Neither of us felt disappointed
by our choices. |

Bruce really enjoyed
getting so close to the glacier, but he was also quite pleased
to get back to the warmth of the ship afterwards. |

the sea as the glacial waters of the fjord meets the darker

Having sailed overnight
from Cape Horn to the Pia Fjord, this afternoon we sailed
out of the fjord and began sailing towards the Hyatt Fjord,
which we would be visiting tomorrow. |
