Day 15: A bit of a swell in the Gulf of Penas

A calm morning with more beautiful scenery in the fjords,
followed by quite a rough afternoon and night at sea.

We both attended Grant's photography workshop and picked up some useful tips.

As we approached the end of the Messier Channel, the sun came out and we made the most of the calm conditions to get out on deck. It turned out to be a photo opportunity with some of the nice people we have met so far on the tirp.

We really enjoyed Peter and Eveline's company and hope to stay in touch with them.

We enjoyed a good lunch on the Lido Deck in calm conditions. A snapshot of our position at 14:11 showed that we were about to enter the Gulf of Penas.

The sea immediately began to look a little choppy.

We were strongly recommended to return to our cabins and make ourselves comfortable for the next few hours. The captain gave us a status report just as things began to turn lively. (Sound on)

This is a map I found on my weather app, indicating wave heights of 5 metres. (Yesterday they were at 10 metres!)

The ship had been prepared!

A snapshot of the situation at 14:47. The wave height was recorded as 3.4 metres, not quite as bad as feared.

Further snapshots at 18:33 and 01:56 the next morning. The motion was a bit uncomfortable, but Bruce managed to make it to the diningroom for dinner anyway. Geoff stayed in bed. By 01:56 we had left the gulf and were heading north. The ship had made good progress and there was considerably less motion by the early hours of the morning.

We would be sailing all day tomorrow, heading directly for Puerto Monnt, where we hoped to go ashore the following day. Sadly, we could not visit Chiloe Island because of the weather delays we had experienced.
