Day 6: Embark Island Sky in Ushuaia

Welcome refreshments, time to settle in and unpack,
a safety drill and then a beautiful sail-away.

Wednesday 6th March 2024
Five days after leaving home, during which time we had been living out of our suitcases, we were finally able to get up close to our ship. It was a most welcome sight.

Looking back towards the entrance to the port.

We were welcomed aboard by some familiar staff members and taken into the lounge for drinks and snacks.

After enjoying the welcome buffet, which wasn't that long after lunch(!), we were ready to go to our cabin and unpack. Our baggage, last seen at the airport, was ready and waiting for us.

An hour later, we had our mandatory lifeboat drill.

We weren't quite sure who these people were, but we assumed that they were the ship's local agents and that they had probably worked with the ship's crew over the past few months, during which time the ship would have been in and out of this port a number of times. The ship was now heading towards the northern hemisphere and it would be some time before it would be back in Argentina, hence, we assumed, the warm and quite touching send-off.

We sailed at 6pm. We were given a welcome briefing shortly afterwards. After dinner, we had a very early night. We weren't even aware that we had paused at Puerto Williams to formally clear our entry into Chile and to pick up the two Chilean pilots, who would accompany us on the rest of the voyage.
