Day 9: Hyatt Fjord
|
|
A memorable day in another atmospheric
and beautiful fjord.

Today's original plan
was for us to sail to Punta Arenas, from where we would
take a private ferry to an island (we think), but strong
winds in the vicinity meant that we couldn't do that. Hyatt
Fjord was selected as an alternative destination. It was
a new destination for the ship and the expedition team,
but thanks to our experienced Chilean pilots, we were able
to have a wonderful day here. |

Rain was falling intermittently.
There was a fair amount of brash ice and a rather chilly
wind. No surprise then that Geoff decided not to go for
the zodiac cruise today. Bruce, on the other hand, was keen
to go out. |

Our zodiac driver, Fran,
was about to start the engine and return to the ship. There
was almost complete silence. I was taking a video of the
glacier and the movement of the brash ice, when suddenly
there was a slight popping sound from behind us and an audible
expelling of air as a leopard seal emerged from out of the
water, taking us all by complete surprise. Fran told us
that it was a female and immediately radioed the other zodiac
drivers, who all made their way over to us. For at least
half an hour, she appeared to be as fascinated by us as
we were with her, ducking and diving from one zodiac to
another so that everybody could get a close up view of her.
It was such a special treat. |

Eventually we had to
return to the ship. We were cold, but happy! |

We sailed off and out
of the fjord during lunch. During the rest of the afternoon,
we relaxed and admired the stunning scenery. |

Yet another
appetising afternoon tea. |
