Day 6: We fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia
An early flight to Ushuaia, followed
by lunch at the lovely
Arakur Hotel before driving to the port where our
ship is docked.

It was another early
start. Not quite as early as the last flight out of Buenos
Aires, but early enough. Once again, we had to drive to
the international airport instead of the much more convenient
domestic airport. |
One benefit of an early
start was that the peak hour traffic hadn't begun so we
were able to get to the airport in less than an hour. It
was also a gorgeously sunny morning which helped. We have
been really impressed by this city with its elegant building,
wide boulevards and greenery. |

We were
almost there. |
Our luggage had been
transported to the airport separately and we were very pleased
to see that all the cases had been matched and put onto
separate trolleys at the airport. All we had to do was identify
our belongings and push the trolley to the check-in desk.
Despite our reservations about some of the timings, we can't
fault the organisation behind it all. Furthermore, this
transfer had been done for 90+ people, because unlike the
Iguazu excursion where there were only 30 of us, all of
the remaining passengers had arrived yesterday. Check-in
was smooth and our flight was on time. We were soon ready
to begin the take-off roll! |
Our route today was mostly
over the sea. Disappointingly, because of thick cloud below
us, we couldn't see much for most of the three and a half
hour flight, especially the arrival over Tierra del Fuego,
which Bruce knows from past experience, is amazing. |
The Beagle
Channel, as we approach Ushuaia airport. |
After landing and collecting
our luggage, we boarded a coach and were driven into the
town, where we caught a tantalising glimpse of the Island
Sky... |
... and on up to the Arakur Hotel where we
would be having lunch. (Note, this photo was taken on Bruce's
last visit). |
The view of the town and the port from the grounds
of the Arakur Hotel.

The hotel provided
a delicious buffet lunch for us.
(Not our photo, but it looked exactly like this,
including the view!) |
After lunch, we drove back down the hill towards
the town and the port...
...and finally the waiting was over. At 4:30pm
we were all set to board.
