Day 12: "Sound of Last Hope"
& Bernal Glacier
|
|
At sea in the Bernardo O'Higgins
National Park, sailing through the White passage
and seeing the amazing Bernal Glacier.
|
|
|
|
Having remained at anchor
overnight in Puerto Natales, we departed on schedule at
7:30am, heading north into Seno Ultima Esperanza ("Sound
of Last Hope") for a scenic cruise, before turning
back past our overnight anchorage point towards the White
Passage. |

Many people gathered
on deck to take part in the eBird survey. |

|
The geography in this
area is complex and I was a bit confused about where we
were going, so I did a little research to make sense of
it. |
|
|
|
Just before midday,
we arrived at the White channel (aka White narrows or White
passage, depending on which book or map you consult) in
time for the slack tide. The process today was the same
as when we sailed through the Kirke channel/passage a couple
of days ago, with two zodiacs being despatched to check
when the tide at the narrowest point became optimal. |

The channel widens as
we sail towards the entrance to the "Channel of the
Mountains" fjord. |

Those towers look familiar.
We had sailed sufficiently far north to a point parallel
with the national park that we visited yesterday. |
|
|
|
We turned into the "Channel
of the Mountains" fjord, which is where the amazing
Bernal and Zamudio Glaciers drain into from the South Patagonian
Icefield. |

When it became a bit
too fresh to keep standing out on the deck, we could continue
to admire the scenery from our cabin. |

Sailing back down the
fjord, the sun came out and we were rewarded with a beautiful
rainbow. |
|
|
|
The chocolate and pistachio
roulade for dessert after dinner was delicious! |
|
|
|
We were still on schedule
and making good progress as we continued our north-bound
voyage. We were looking forward to going ashore in Puerto
Edén tomorrow. |
