Madeira: Porto Santo

Wednesday 27th April 2022

With only a short distance to sail from Funchal to Porto Santo, we spent much of last night sailing as slowly as possible. The view which greeted us in the morning was a complete contrast from yesterday.

We decided not to go on the longish coach excursion this morning. Although it sounded interesting, we just needed some time by ourselves. The walk (3km each way) from the port to the main town, Vila Baleira, proved to be just what we wanted (and needed!).

We were intrigued by the installation near the port and what it was there for.

The contents of the vertical pipes were in constant motion. Fascinating.

The walk from the port into the town was lovely and quiet.

We chose this pleasant looking cafe to stop and have coffee. The "Queijadas da Madeira" (a cheesecake made with cottage cheese) seemed to be a popular choice here, so we decided to try some too. It was delicious and Geoff has found a recipe for it, to try at home.

We were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill. Around €4, which is well below what we might have paid almost anywhere else in the Europe.

We then popped into the local supermarket where the low-price theme continued, so we bought a few things.

The own-brand red wine looked like value for money... but no, we didn't.

After a happy couple of hours mooching, we walked back to the ship.

The harbour, with our ship on the right and the Porto Santo-Madeira ferry in the centre.
(Picture "borrowed" from Neil, because we didn't go on the tour!)

We arrived back on board before the rest of the passengers.
Time to enjoy a refreshing "Saint Clements" cocktail before lunch.

After lunch, and with everybody back on board, it was time to sail once again. Next stop Lisbon, 492 nautical miles away.

An example of what is on offer for afternoon tea. Not to be missed!

A thoroughly enjoyable day. The dinner invitation was the cherry on top!
