Fly to Tenerife, embark ship and sail

Thursday 21st April 2022

Like our trip from Heathrow to Seville in November last year, a specially chartered plane had been arranged for the flight from Gatwick to Tenerife. Unlike last year's trip, however, we had to arrange our own lateral flow tests beforehand and present the certificates, showing a negative result, to the representative at the airport before being allowed to board. This time, the charter was with TUI. We were given a free meal and two free drinks during the four hour flight. The food was good, the weather was perfect for flying and the time passed quickly.

An excellent view of Gatwick airport shortly after take-off as we turned north, west and then south.

An equally good view of Dunsfold Aerodrome.

We chose champagne as one of our free drinks... of course!

Approaching Tenerife, as the sun began to set.

Tenerife South Airport

It was dark by the time we got into the terminal building, but our excellent cruise director, Neil (who was already on the ship), had been in contact with the airport to let them know that we were all fully vaccinated and had all had negative Covid tests before boarding. As a result, we were all waved through the health checks at the airport. Our luggage arrived exceptionally quickly too and within 30 minutes of disembarking, we were in coaches on our way to the ship! We were suitably impressed. It was getting quite late and we still had a 45 minute drive from the airport to the port of Santa Cruz, where our ship was docked, but we couldn't have asked for a better embarkation process and by 10pm we were sipping champagne (again!) in our cabin.

Regardless of the lateness of the hour, the mandatory lifeboat drill had to take place.

At around midnight, after we had unpacked and were preparing to go to bed, we sailed away from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If we want to see Tenerife in the dalight, we will have to pay it another visit some time in the future!
