Canary Islands: El Hierro
It was another early
start. Waking up to a dramatic sunrise in Puerto de la Estaca,
El Hierro, the view from our balcony looked pretty much
the same as yesterday morning's view, but then we couldn't
see much beyond the massive, modern looking harbour wall. |
Today, once again, we
had chosen the walking excursion in preference to the scenic
coach drive that others had opted for. This mean that we
got to depart a whole twenty minutes after the first group.
We weren't complaining. |

Leaving Puerto de la
Estaca harbour, we set off in a rather small, under-powered
minibus up the steep road towards the island's capital,
Valverde. |
Half way up, our tour
representive on the bus got a call to say that we had left
two passengers behind (they were late) and so we had to
turn around and go back for them. Geoff and I closed our
eyes until the turn was complete! |
After quite some time,
we arrived at the starting point of our guided walk. |
We followed
the four kilometre green route. |

Unfortunately,
we didn't see much of the view! |

We completed
the walk close to where we had started it. |
Back on the little
bus, we drove to the La Peña viewpoint, where we
sat on a terrace which had amazing views. We were treated
to some local cheese and a choice of red or white wine. |

We returned
to the ship for a late lunch. |

After dinner, Neil hosted
an England themed quiz. The winning team's prize were some
rather dubious looking rubber lizards. Our team came second,
so no scary creatures for us! |
