Day 16 - Going ashore at Stonybeach Bay, Tristan da Cunha

Stonybeach Bay ahead. We saw two people heading towards it in a Zodiac. Could this be our last chance to go ashore on Tristan da Cunha?

I believe the text above should read Stonybeach Bay, not Sandy Point beach and the "bumpy ride" referred to is something of an understatement!

After what must be the longest, wettest, wildest and most fun Zodiac rides ever, we landed on a very rough, stony beach on the far side of the island. I was soaked to the skin with very warm sea water, despite my waterproof layers. Thankfully my camera was in a separate waterproof bag and it was fine.

Our ship is a only a speck on the horizon!

Of course, there had to be selfies taken. It was really difficult to do this, because the ground was either strewn with stones or there was quite a slippery slope to contend with. Luckily, a fellow passenger offered to take one or two of me. Despite that, the light made it really difficult to get a reasonable image and I had to enhance some of the photos later.

After a reasonable time ashore, it was time to return to the ship.

While I waited my turn to go back, I was fascinated to see how many people were required to ensure a safe operation in tricky conditions.

Leaving land behind as we headed back to the ship, it would be several days before we would be able to go ashore again, but I was very happy. I had walked on Tristan da Cunha!
