Views
from the Bridge are always good. |

Several
others had the same idea as me today, which was quite unusual. |

The 1960's documentary referred to above
was fascinating. It showed what life here was like after
the volcanic eruption, the evacuation and the return to
the island two years later. Of all the land that the lava
could have flowed across, it covered their only safe landing
point, which necessitated the evacuation. All but 4 people
returned to the island, but within a year 35 chose to
go back to England, with many of those returning a second
time.

The main island of the Tristan da Cunha
group is Tristan da Cunha, where all 250 or so inhabitants
live in one tiny settlement, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.
The rest of the island is pretty inaccessible, even to the
locals.

It was
clear that even the experienced Zodiac drivers were finding the
sea conditions difficult. |

I happened
to be looking out when the crayfish, referred to in the log, were
being brought on board! |

I wasn't too concerned
about not being able to go ashore today. We still had three
more days here, so hopefully we'd have another opportunity. |
