Day 5: The North West: Ísafjörður
& Dynjandi
|
|
Sailing into the
town of Ísafjörður from the
Ísafjarðardjúp
fjord
followed by an excursion to the Dynjandi Waterfall.

|
|
|
We were grateful for
calm seas overnight. This morning we awoke to gorgeous views
in the Ísafjarðardjúp fjord. |

The image below was not taken by us,
but it illustrates the geography really well, so we have
used it.
The town of Ísafjörður
is the capital of the Westfjords region. The town centre
and the port are located on a spit of sand, or eyri, in
Skutulsfjörður, a small fjord which meets the
waters of the larger Ísafjarðardjúp
fjord.
After sailing from open sea into the larger fjord earlier,
we turned right into the smaller fjord and through the
channel close to the runway, before turning right and
right again to dock at the port in the centre of this
image.
After disembarking, we were taking by
coach along the shoreline towards the houses in the foreground
before turning right to go towards the Dynjandi Waterfall.
Later, when we sailed away, we were lucky enough to see
a plane taking off from the airport right next to the
ship.

The first part of the
climb wasn't too bad, but it got steadily steeper and more
difficult. Geoff decided to go no further, but Bruce went
on. |

On the return journey
I took a couple of photos in the tunnels, one of which is
the longest in Iceland. For a country with a small population,
they have a lot of amazing and presumably expensive tunnels. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
We decided
to go straight back to the ship. There wasn't really a lot of free
time for independent exploration. |

As we sailed past the
runway, I spotted a plane taxiing to the far end, about
to depart. Annoyingly, the ship turned just before it was
about to take off. I rushed out of the cabin to the back
of the ship, hoping to capture it, but by the time I got
there, it was already in the sky! |
