Day 1: Fly to Reykjavik, Iceland
Flight from Heathrow to Keflavik, transfer to
our hotel and some free time before dinner.
Our airline, Icelandair,
uses "No1 Lounges" at Gatwick. Somewhat overcrowded,
but quite comfortable once we had found a seat. We've experienced
better lounges e.g. cheap cocktail sausages and prosecco
instead of champagne, but we aren't snobs (he states with
a wink!). |
Our plane.
Embarkation was smooth and we departed on time. |
Flying
out over West Sussex with East Grinstead (I think) in the middle
distance. |
The offering on board
included a "gin library". We were intrigued but
decided that it might not be a good idea because we had
fairly long day ahead! We were surprised to discover that
there was free wi-fi so we did feel the need to share our
discovery with some envious friends. |
Of course,
when it came to free champagne, all resistance failed! |
The Rhins
of Galloway, a hammer-headed peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway,
Scotland. |
Nine
minutes later, a view of the Inner Hebridean island of Islay. |
Lunch
was a Moroccan chicken dish and although served cold, it was really
delicious. |
These
curiously coloured "chocolate miracles" were equally delicious. |
Two and
a half hours after taking off, we were on our final approach to
Keflavik airport. |
After a very pleasant
flight so far, things started to go less smoothly after
we landed. The air bridge at the gate wasn't working so
we had to wait for ages before we could disembark. Something
to do with buses not being available. Once the buses did
arrive, they only had to drive us about 50 metres, which
we could have walked easily, but procedures are procedures!
Once inside the terminal building we found that it was very
busy indeed and we had to walk for a very long way past
crowded departure gates. It is very unusual nowadays for
departing passengers to be mixed with arriving passengers.
Finally we found the signs for "exit to Iceland"
and we could then go through passport control. Some of our
fellow passengers had struggled to navigate through the
airport, so even when we had got onto the coach, we still
had to wait for almost an hour before everybody else had
made it through. |
The Foss
Hotel, where we were going to stay for the next two nights. |
It was quite a long
drive from the airport to the centre of Reykjavik, so by
the time we arrived, we didn't have much time to get settled
into our room, before we had to set off for the Jörgensen
Kitchen & Bar, where we had reserved a table. |
The meal was delicious.
We were expecting to pay a lot for food and drink in Iceland
and although it wasn't cheap, we were prepared for the bill,
which was the equivalent of 92 pounds. |
