Rhodes (Day 2)
The Acropolis at Lindos

Monday 29th September 2014

Another gorgeous day, just like yesterday. Warm sunshine, not too hot and the prospect of a scenic journey south along the coastline of Rhodes to Lindos. Here, we were to see another ancient marvel, the magnificent Acropolis, set high above the little town.

According to our guide book, we would be "walking to the Acropolis, surrounded by the contrasting 12th century crusader fortifications, clinging to the rocks above the village".

We were hoping that it wasn't us that would be clinging to the rocks!

An hour after leaving the ship, our coach arrived at the parking lot near the Acropolis and we walked downhill towards the assembly point. Our guides went off to buy our tickets, while we looked up and contemplated the steep climb ahead.
We were led though the narrow streets of the village at the base of the Acropolis to the starting point of the climb.
The views got better as we climbed; this one looking north (back towards Rhodes Town)
At the base of the Hellenistic staircase leading up to the main archealogical part of the Acropolis, is a semi-circular exedra (below left) and a relief of a Rhodian trireme (warship) (below right) cut into the rock. The relief dates from about 180 BC.

After climbing the staircase, we were in the main part of the Acropolis.

St Paul's Bay, where it is reported the apostle landed during a storm

That little bear has been to some amazing places!

Climbing back down afterwards, we got some more good views,
including the Byzantine Panagia church with its belltower, located in the centre of the village.

We had half an hour before our coach was due to depart, so we could either shop or eat ice cream.
For Bruce, there was no difficulty with the choice!
All of the lanes in the village are narrow and would, we thought, be very crowded at the height of the season.
Luckily, we were able to move quite easily down them and back towards our coach.
We were sorry to leave. We could easily have spent a little more time here.
"That's the last time I'll be rude to the Captain!"
We were back on board for a late lunch, after which we strolled back into town to find a cafe with free wi-fi!
It had been a lovely couple of days in Rhodes and at around 6.00pm we sailed.
We were reliably informed that the weather for tomorrow was going to be good for our second attempt at a visit to Kos.
