Syros - exploring Ermoupoli
& Ano Syros independently

Friday 26th September 2014

We arrived early at Ermoupoli on the Greek island of Syros.
The clouds lifted sufficiently to make way for a fair amount of sunshine.
The ship was docked very close to the town. We could have joined the guided walking tour, but decided instead to follow the suggestions provided under the category of "Exploring Syros independently" on our port information sheet. Susan decided to do the same and joined us as we set off after breakfast.
We walked through the centre of the town, passing Miaoulis Square.
We had intended to do the 30-40 minute climb up to Ano Syros (Upper Syros), so that's what we did.
There was a lot of up!

Looking back as we climbed - the view made our efforts seem worthwhile.

At the top of the hill is the St George Cathedral. We didn't go inside (it looked like it was closed)
The views from Ano Syros were amazing. Below, on the right, is the St Nicholas Church, which we thought me might aim for next.

There were cats everywhere!

At the bottom of the hill is the St Nicholas Cathedral.
Looking back up to Ano Syros

Unlike the cathedral at the top of the hill,
this one was definitely open, so we went in for a look.

Afterwards, we went for a drink at a cafe and used their free wi-fi...
...before walking back to the ship for lunch.
After lunch we set off again to do a bit more sightseeing in the town itself.

By 4.00 pm, we were back on board for tea... mmm I could get used to this!
It had been a very pleasant day and at 8.00pm we departed for our next destination, Santorini.
