Athens (Day 2)
Sightseeing with Maureen & Kiki

Wednesday 24th September 2014
Our friends Maureen and Kiki arrived
at our hotel promptly at 10.00 am, as arranged.
We decided that we needed to take some photos from our balcony,
with the Greek parliament building in the background. |
Afterwards, we set off on our personalised tour of the city,
expertly led by two ladies who know it well!
The first of many seemingly ownerless dogs, which we were to
see all over Greece and Turkey.
Maureen and Kiki took us to the
roof terrace of a hotel they know in the Plaka, from where we got
some really good views of the acropolis. |
The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea
is a Greek Orthodox church and is one of the oldest churches in
Athens |

We spent time exploring the markets
and found them very interesting. |
We walked towards Monastiraki, which
is a flea market neighbourhood in the old town and is home
to many clothing and souvenir shops. |
We took a break at a cafe on Monastiraki
Square and planned the next stage of our walk. |
Hadrian's Library |
For some reason, we didn't take many
photos during the next hour or two. Perhaps we were too
absorbed in looking at all the shops, but Bruce did like
this little doggy, which was clearly owned and loved! |
After stopping for a good lunch, we
walked Maureen and Kiki back to their hotel and then went
back to ours for a rest. |
Later that afternoon, we set off again
for another walk. We weren't planning to go anywhere in
particular, but found ourselves gravitating towards the
acropolis and ended up walking around the base of it. |

A view of the ancient agora of Athens |
We found a really good spot to get
this view of the acropolis |
A couple of hours later, we were
back at Syntagma Square. |
That evening, we met up with the
ladies again for a meal at our hotel's wonderful roof garden restaurant. |
We timed it just right and were
treated to a wonderful sunset as we enjoyed our starters.
Geoff's starter looked very colourful - it was a ceviche trilogy
with sea bass, salmon and shrimp, yuzu sorbet and thyme honey. |
Bruce's main course - risotto with saffron,
shrimp and zucchini |
Geoff's dessert - hazelnut praline mousse with
milk chocolate,
mango and passion fruit

The end of a lovely day. Thank you
to Maureen and Kiki for helping to make it so enjoyable! |
