Doubtful Sound

On Wednesday, the sun shone and we decided to take the 8-hour trip to Doubtful Sound. Starting from Lake Manapouri, we caught a ferry across the Lake, passing several large islands and finally reaching the Manapouri hydroelecrtric power station. We were taken by coach into a tunnel which spiralled down for 1.5km until we were deep under the lake. There we disembarked to see the turbines generating vast amounts of power, all from the natural difference in height between two lakes. Ecological and economical! Then back onto the coach and - with some relief! - out into the sunshine to drive up and over the Wilmott Pass down to Doubtful Sound. On another boat and a 3-hour cruise along the beautiful stretch of water. The surrounding mountains were covered in trees and cascades - we decided that we had never before seen such stunning scenery. We sailed as far as Bauza Island on the Tasman Sea, where we saw Fur Seals, before turning round and returning back to Manapouri. A memorable day indeed.
