The first sight of North
Island were the two headlands protecting Wellington Harbour.
We arrived in Wellington later that afternoon, Wednesday
7th April. |

We picked up our bright
red Holden Vectra (otherwise known as "The Tank")
and drove to our B&B, The Gatehouse. It was fabulous:
we had a little house all to ourselves. Inside was very
stylish, with every need catered for. Our hostess, Lisa,
was hospitality itself: no nonsense like mini bars - the
fridge was well stocked with essentials like wine and chocolate,
and Lisa explained these were included in the price. We
were soon to find out that she was a brilliant cook - our
breakfasts were feasts! |

The next day, we toured round
Wellington. seeing the Parliament Building, known as "the
Beehive"... |
|
|
|
...and visting the brilliant Te Papa Tongarewa
Museum of New Zealand. We spent hours there. |
|
|
The Civic Centre was also
an interesting place to be - but preferably not when it's
raining. |
|
|
We took the funicular railway
to get a view over the city, but then we had to admit defeat
- the rain was getting too bad for sightseeing and we decided
to go back to The Gatehouse and enjoy its luxuries. |
|
The following day was Good Friday, and again Lisa spoiled
us with Easter eggs and that unique New Zealand delicacy,
chocolate marshmallows. The little boxes, decorated with
chicks and ribbons, lasted us on our next long journey
as we bade good-bye to Wellington and the Gatehouse.
