On Good Friday, we drove to Napier from Wellington
- our longest drive, taking 5 hours. We stopped on the way
at several places, including the Mt Bruce (well, we had
to , didn’t we?) National Wildlife Centre. There they
breed many species of endangered birds, including kiwi,
so we managed to see our first kiwi! |
|
Napier was completely flattened
by an earthquake in the early 30’s and was rebuilt
quickly, so many of the buildings are Art Deco in style,
and the place looks like a movie set. We wandered round,
taking lots of photos of this now-rare style.

Even the cathedral was art
deco! |
|
Not all the buildings were
Art Deco - some were more typical of New Zealand |
|
We stayed in a very nice B&B - Cobden
Garden Homestay. Our hosts, Rayma and Phillip Jenkins
were very hospitable, providing all of their guests with free
wine and food tastings each evening. They took this photo
of us in the dining room. |

The next morning, Phillip suggested a route
to Taupo, our next stop, via some beauty spots and the wine
district. It was an excellent suggestion, and we had a lovely
drive and sampled several wines - we can strongly recommend
Clearview and Church Road. We also visited the Craggy
Range winery below. |
