On Friday 26th March, we
drove to Queenstown through the High Country. Stunning scenery
- a little like the Andes (we rather expected to see llamas).

Before we got to Queenstown, we drove to Arrowtown,
an old mining village. It was very interesting with the "Wild
West" style buildings that the gold prospectors had built
in the 1840's.There was also a separate Chinese village, which
was not as comfortable.. |

Queenstown was quite busy. They say that NZ
is the land of the long white cloud. Well, Queenstown was
the town of the low black cloud, and for the first time since
we left home, the sun vanished and it started to rain. Still,
the view from our B&B (Larch
Hill Homestay) window was wonderful, and the Dutch couple
who ran it made us very comfortable. |
|
We explored the town, which is on the banks
of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the mountains aptly named
'The Remarkables'. |

The gorge just outside of town is famous for
introducing bungy jumping to the world. We watched, but were
not tempted. |
