We left Invercargill with regret,
and continued along the Southern Scenic route, but unfortunately
the rain made it less than scenic. Even our stop at Tuatapere,
"the sausage capital of New Zealand" (I kid you
not) was marred by the shop being shut... |
But as we drove inland, the
sun came out and the scenery became more dramatic. We stopped
by Lake Manapouri where the mountains were reflected in
the still waters. |
We arrived at Te Anau for our two night stay at The
Croft, which also enjoyed some beautiful scenery across
Lake Te Anau. We were well looked after by Jane, who ran
the B&B.
The B&B
had a pet sheep, Dolly and a Jack Russell, Mac. |
We explored
the lakeside. It was beautiful. |
There was a wildlife centre with
aviaries so that one could see the rare native birds of New
Zealand which were being pushed to the edge of extinction
by the creatures introduced by man. |
Clockwise, staring left: the very rare takaha (under 500
left in the world); a kea, a kaka; and a pukeko. |
More pukekos! |
