Day 3: Chennai sightseeing

A half-day tour of some of the city's main attractions before returning to the hotel for lunch and then driving to the port to board our ship.

Tuesday 18th February 2025

Breakfast in the same venue as last night's dinner.

Sue and Caroline having breakfast with one of the local representatives.

This is the route we took on our tour of Chennai. The order of visits differed slightly from the programme. Traffic delays and lack of time meant that we didn't get to visit St. Mary's Church, Fort St George Campus or the Government Museum, although we did see that last two from the outside. Despite missing three of the places on the list, we still felt that we got a good flavour of the city and saw many other unexpected landmarks. The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the visit to the Kapaleeshwarar Temple.

The coach dropped us off here, from where we got a good view of the temple we would be visiting across the water.

This cat looked very relaxed in the placed reserved for us to put our shoes while we were in the temple complex. We didn't disturb it!

We weren't supposed to take any photos within the temple grounds, but we sneaked these three!

After the visit, we walked slowly back to where the coach had dropped us off.

This was the moment when our schedule took an unexpected turn. A visiting dignitary—possibly the state governor, as we overheard—was making a special appearance, leading to the closure of all nearby roads. As a result, our coach couldn't reach us, and we ended up waiting about 45 minutes until the roads reopened. We didn’t mind too much; it turned out to be a pleasant opportunity to sit back and enjoy some people-watching.

The coach turned up eventually and off we went.
