Last day
in Basel

Monday 16th September 2024

The brilliant sunshine that we enjoyed yesterday had disappeared. The sky was grey and light rain was falling intermittently. Our flight home was scheduled for 7:00pm so we had to keep ourselves occupied in the meantime. We only needed to be out of our hotel room at 12 noon, which allowed us to have a very leisurely morning. Checking out just before 12 and leaving our luggage with the hotel, we set off, intending to see what we might have missed on the other side of the river.

We visited a couple of the big supermarkets in the city, which were interesting. When we began to get tired, we went back to the Italian/Mediterranean restaurant where we had had lunch on our first day in the city.

Despite the lovely views across the river, It was a little cool to sit outside so we asked to be seated inside. We weren't particularly hungry, but we managed to enjoy a light pasta dish. The staff were really friendly and spoke English very well.

Returning to the hotel at 4:00pm, we collected our luggage and walked down the now familiar path to the tram stop, where we caught a tram to the railway station. There we transferred to the airport bus shuttle and were soon on our way to the airport.

We approached the airport from the Swiss side, which is kept separate from the French side. We found it fascinating that the airport has segregated entrances and exits, depending on which country you are approaching from or leaving to, yet once inside the airport building, the border between the two countries seems to disappear! We liked the business class lounge, which has excellent views of the planes.

There is an outdoor viewing terrace accessible from the lounge. Bruce went out to see the arrival of our plane, but by now it was raining quite steadily, so he didn't stay out for long.

Once we took off and got above the clouds, we were treated to the most beautiful sunset. What a lovely ending to a very happy holiday!
