Edith & Gregor arrive in Strasbourg
and we catch up over lunch and dinner.

Thursday 12th September 2024

We started the morning with breakfast at the same place as yesterday. Once again, we enjoyed it very much and decided that we would return there tomorrow as well!

Edith and Gregor let us know that they would be arriving by train from Basel at around noon, so we resumed our slightly haphazard walking tour in the morning. Having said that, Geoff was consulting the map and was intent on ticking off everything that appeared to be interesting.

We were aiming for Barrage Vauban. Although we had seen the area briefly yesterday, we hadn't explored it thoroughly. It is clearly one of the major attractions in the city and we wanted to do it justice. Close to the barrage are the bridges and towers making up Ponts Couverts.

The thirteen birds that can been seen flying from right to left in this photo are all the same bird, taken using a video and then combined to show the path that the bird took... all in about one second!

Here again, the five birds in the image are all the same bird.

Leaving the area of the barrage, we continued our self-guided walking tour.

Edith and Gregor arrived at our hotel at 12:30pm, as arranged. After a brief catch-up in the hotel lounge, we all decided that we'd like some lunch. We walked the short distance to La Corde à Linge (The Clothesline), an Alsatian Brasserie where we had had a snack on the day we arrived.

The wind was a bit fresh today, so we opted to sit at a table inside. Gregor ordered escargot, whereas Edith decided on a small portion of foie gras, followed by steak tartare.

Not feeling that adventurous, Bruce and Geoff both opted for the restaurant's speciality dish, Spätzle, ("Taffetas" and "Feutrine" respectively), hoping that they would be light and not too filling... hmmm, well they were delicious anyway!

After lunch, we enjoyed a further walking tour of the city, this time accompied by E&G before going back to our respective hotels for a rest before dinner.

We met up again for pre-dinner drinks at a popular bar.

This one was taken en-route from the bar to the restaurant.

The restaurant we were going to is described in the Michelin Guide as follows:-

"Experience local gastronomic specialities and traditional decor (Renaissance features, posters) in this restaurant next door to the Musée Alsacien, with its displays of popular art."

The restaurant is a favourite of Edith & Gregor's and they had reserved a table several weeks ahead. Bruce was just hoping that there would be something on the menu that he could eat!

Bruce's fears that the menu might be too "local" were unfounded. Although there was plenty he wouldn't eat, there were many things that he would...

...starting with this delicious onion tart.

Geoff chose the Cordon Bleu for his main course.

Gregor ordered the choucroute, which he said was delicious.

Geoff had the quetsch tart for dessert, which he said was equally delicious.

Gregor and Geoff each had grappa to finish the meal, after which we all said goodnight and walked in different directions to our respective hotels.
