Day 5: At leisure in Saguenay, Quebec

A leisurely morning sailing the St Lawrence & Saguenay rivers
followed by an afternoon stroll around La Baie, Saguenay.

Saturday 5th October 2024
The sailing distance from Quebec City to Sauguenay is 165 nautical miles. By the time we awoke in the morning, we had turned left from the St Lawrence River and into the Saugenay River.

We were only due to arrive at lunchtime so we enjoyed a relaxing morning admiring the beautiful scenery.

After sailing up the Saguenay River, we dropped anchor in Baie des Ha! Ha! Cove, close to La Baie, one of the three boroughs making up the city of Saguenay.

Our plan to dock alongside in the port got thwarted when a large P&O ship got there first, which meant that we had to disembark via zodiac. (We had been advised beforehand that we would need to disembark by zodiac in Halifax only, but as it happened, they were able to accommodate the ship there, so this was the only occasion when a zodiac transfer were required.)

Despite Geoff's apprehension about zodiacs, the water was very calm and he coped really well, although to say that he enjoyed it might be a step too far!

Once ashore, we saw people queuing to take a helicopter sightseeing tour. Bruce was momentarily tempted, but decided against it.

Friendly locals were offereing free maple taffy, which we had tasted previously near Quebec City.

Geoff enjoyed his second tasting. Bruce decided that once had been sufficient for him.

We decided against joining one of the two coach tours on offer this afternoon, deciding instead to stroll around the small port area independently.

The ship which "stole" our docking postion...
...looked massive compared with our ship, anchored in the bay beyond it.

After stretching our legs, we decided to return to the ship for afternoon tea.

Our zodiac driver was learning to drive, under the guidance of a more experienced crew member and we were treated to a little bit of an extra ride before we reached the ship. Despite Geoff's slight nervousness, all was fine and he even chatted to the instructor. Bruce really enjoyed the experience.

Arriving back in our cabin, we were pleased to see that we had been invited to join two very nice ladies at their table for dinner. We knew both of them from previous trips, so it was a really good chance to catch up with them.

The dinner was excellent. Last night's teething problems had been resolved and the service was slick and friendly, with both food and wines living up to expectations.
