Ushuaia:
Exploring the town after a beautiful walk

Sunday 26th March 2023
Today's plan was to be a little more adventurous than yesterday. I planned to take the hotel's free shuttle bus to the centre of town. Being a Sunday, I knew that most places would be closed, but I wanted to find the luggage drop-off point for tomorrow. I also needed a bit of exercise, knowing that I wouldn't be doing much walking while I was on the ship.

The next shuttle was only at 11:00 a.m. which was a little more than an hour from now.

Looking at the map, the distance was 6.1km, so I decided to walk. It was a really good decision.

It was perfect walking weather and the scenery was wonderful.

As I got close to the airport, I paused for a while to watch the planes.

This supermarket was one of my milestones. I was on the right road.

Another view of the airport.

One of the roads leading off this roundabout leads to the airport.

One of many reminders about the Falklands conflict. The "Malvinas" is an open wound in Argentina. It's hard to see that they will ever accept the status quo.

An archery competition in progress.

Just in case I had any doubts about where I was, this sign left me in no doubt. Having said that, the map of the Falkland Islands on the left might have confused some people.

Ushuaia's port. Local tourist boats in the foreground. Antarctic bound ships in the background.

This is where I hope to see my ship tomorrow.

Having found the luggage drop-off point for tomorrow, I walked up a couple of streets into the centre of town.

The centre of town. My assumption was right. Most places were closed.

Argentine Naval Base.

Another reference to Islas Malvinas, 785km from here if you follow the arrow apparently, despite the fact that you can't travel to the Falklands from here, except if you are travelling on a foreign vessel and as part of a sub-antarctic expedition.

Having been on my feet for several hours, I decided to take the shuttle bus back to the hotel.

In the evening, I didn't fancy a repeat of last night's large meal, so I went to the bar and had a delicious club sandwich with a glass of Malbec (of course), whilst admiring the wonderful view.

Tomorrow was a big day. The start of the expedition and I was looking forward to it very much.
