South Georgia:
Stromness Bay & Grytviken

Our first view of
the remains of the whaling station in Stromness Bay. |
|
|
After the joy of seeing
so much wildlife in a completely unspoilt setting yesterday,
today was a different day. We visited two abandoned whaling
stations and sailed past a third. We could only imagine
a disturbing past when unsuspecting whales were dragged
ashore in great numbers then killed and processed in these
factories. Most of the infrastructure remains, much of it
crumbling and dangerous. Despite this, it was another wonderful
day in South Georgia. |

From the cemetery,
we walked around the bay towards the small settlement. |
