Riga:
Art Nouveau, folk dancing children and some late, warm sunshine
Programme (1) for 12th July 2011
Programme (2) for 12th July 2011
I'm quite sure that we didn't cross land during
the
night. It appears that live tracking failed, though!
During breakfast we entered
the Daugava River, at its mouth with
the Gulf of Riga, for the
9 mile voyage to the centre of Riga.
A diver (highlighted) was in the water where we were about
to dock!

As the gangplank was being
taken up (five minutes before our departure at 3.00pm) the
last two fellow passengers made it aboard.
They were always the last to board at each port, but always
made it in the nick of time looking flustered!
Afternoon tea on deck included
the highlight of "Bananas Foster", which was delicious!
Late that night (around
11.00 pm) Bruce made a solitary visit onto the deck to see
the ship going through a narrow (and very shallow) channel
- highlighted in red on the map. An hour earlier, a small
boat had brought a local pilot to board our ship to guide
us (video below)
Although it was rather chilly
and increasingly difficult to see much, it was a good experience,
rewarded by a beautiful sunset.
