Sailing overnight from Copenhagen, we arrived on schedule the next morning at the port of Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm.

We were scheduled to stay on Bornholm for a mere four and a half hours, so we decided to join the organised tour, which would take in some of the main highlights, covering an area of about a third of the island. We therefore didn't have time to see much of Rønne itself, but from what we could tell as we drove quickly through it, there wasn't too much to see there anyway.
Our first stop was at Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest medieval fortification, situated on the northern tip of Bornholm.

From Hammershus, we drove along the coast road on the north of the island, passing some pretty little villages along the way.

We stopped at the small town of Gudhjem, where we were treated to a delicious meal of smoked herring at the Rogeri restaurant

We had time after the meal to stroll, take a few pictures and visit the local toffee shop, bearing in mind that the smoked herring we had just eaten was only a morning snack and we still had lunch to look forward to once we got back to the ship!

Geoff thinks these birds could be Eiders

Five kilometers south of Guhjem (heading back towards Rønne), we paid a visit to the Østerlars Church,
one of four round churches on the island

The church's central column is decorated with frescos from 1350 showing biblical scenes from the Annunciation through to the Passion, ending with the Day of Judgment where Jesus judges mankind. Many of the naked figures are sent to hell, symbolized by a huge dragon.

Despite our mid-morning meal of smoked herring, followed by lunch in the restaurant after we re-boarded the ship, we still managed to maintain healthy appetites that evening, including these desserts!
