Lake Titicaca

Day 9: Sunday, 2nd June 2002

We breakfasted at 08:00 and at 09:00 we all walked to the private jetty of the hotel to catch a boat to the floating islands. The sun was shining brilliantly and it was very warm in the sun, but in the shade the temperature plummets. Ruben explained this was a phenomenon of the altitude. If you walk from sun into shade, the temperature can drop by as much as 20oc.

As we glided across the clear, still water, I learned that Ron is a H&S person and has also noted, as I have, that the boat has no life belts except a couple of old car tyres...

One of our boats arrives.

We ten all get on two reed boats and are taken a third island. Very peaceful and a wonderful experience.

We visit four islands. On the last one, we visited a school where the kiddies sang some foreign songs. There was also a shopping opportunity... Bruce bought some bits and pieces for his family.

We all went back to the hotel for a Pisco Sour (I'm getting the hang of Peru!) and a light lunch. Later, we relax in the sun for a while. After all the frantic sightseeing, today was a peaceful, relaxing day.

Later, we visited the Yavari, the famous ship which was carried across the Andes piece by piece by llama. It was moored at the bottom of the hotel grounds.

The captain is a very interesting man, even though he speaks as much English as I do Spanish, but his message come across quite clear an we enjoy a very interesting hour.
