Yet again we were on the move! Yet again it was
an early start! Definitely not a holiday - more
of an experience... We were leaving Cuzco for
Puno on Lake Titicaca. The wake up call was at
06:00 and we were on the coach by 07:00.

|
We had a short
ride on the coach to the station, and
we all got on the train for the 10-hour
journey. Bruce had read that the left-hand
side presented the best views, so we
placed ourselves by the windows on the
left-hand side. We were joined at our
four-seater table by Charlotte and David,
an older couple from Epsom, who amused
us with their anecdotes. |

The scenery along
the way was fantastic. The train had
an observation car with an open rail
at the back from where you could stand
and watch the scenery pass as we entered
the Alte Plano - the high altitude plain
between the Andes. |

|
We stopped at the
highest point (14,000ft) to take some photos and
the inevitable hawkers were there.
We bought some finger puppets for Justin. |
|
|
Back
in the train and we continued on our journey. We
saw a lake full of flamingos and (this time I had
the camera ready!) wild llamas. |
|
|
Not all the sites
were pretty. Some of the towns and villages we passed
were very poor. Juliaca, in particular, was not
attractive. Nevertheless, where ever we passed through,
people stopped to wave a friendly greeting. |

We arrived at Puno
at 17:30 and a got onto a coach. Our luggage was
hauled onto the roof by the driver, and judging
by his loud sound effects, apparently our purchases
were making them very heavy indeed! Our guide was
Ruben - he comes from Juliaca.
We were taken to the hotel Poseda
del Inca which was quite comfortable. Yet another
Pisco Sour introduction (yay!) and a light meal
and yet another early night. |
