Another late lie in - we
only got up at at 8:00! |
|
|
|
We left Puno and as we stopped
for a photo opportunity overlooking the vast lake
Titicaca, we were of course immediately approached
by some young street vendors selling more finger puppets.
We bought some more for Justin. |
|
|
We then drove on to Sillustani,
an old Inca burial site. At a magnificent location by a
lake with some remarkable structures, this was an unexpected
highlight of the day. |

Leaving Sillustani, we
drove to the "international" Inca Manco Capac
Airport at Juliaca to fly to Lima via Arequipa on another
"classic" (i.e. old) 727. |

We were greeted at Lima airport
by the Travel Collection rep, Alberto. Maybe he
had had a long day, but he didn't seem to have much
of a sense of humour and we found his English a
little difficult to understand. His mood wasn't
helped by the fact that our coach to our hotel was
severely delayed by the motorway being closed. As
we crept through the streets of Lima, we witnessed
what Margarita had previously termed "organic
driving" – the cars drove on pavements
if carriageways were blocked and even crossed central
reservation at will! Also the jams encouraged large
numbers of hawkers to walk in the roadway amid stationery
traffic to sell all kinds of things. But our driver
took some amazing shortcuts through some tiny streets
and we were soon back on track. We also got an opportunity
to see some parts of Lima we would never have seen.
Parts seemed to be very poor but we never felt threatened
and people often waved at us. We eventually arrived
at the El Pueblo Resort Hotel. |

|
|
It was built to resemble
a pueblo (village) and was very comfortable - but the luxury
of our accommodation contrasted all-too-sharply with the
shanty town outside. |
