With no more clinic appointments for Bruce, we decided to head out of town to Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote. A short and very inexpensive bus ride, passing the airport along the way, brought us almost to our destination. We may have hopped off a stop too early, as it turned into quite a long walk into the town itself, but we didn’t mind. It gave us some welcome exercise, and best of all, there were no hills to climb!

The beaches, which looked beautiful, seemed to be deserted. Perhaps it was just early, but it felt as if this was less of a tourist resort and more of a residential/administrative centre.

An aerial view of the city...

...and a map showing the route (more or less) that we walked, starting from the edge-of-town bus station (bottom left) and ending at the city's main bus station, from where we caught the bus back to Puerto del Carmen.

One of the reasons we visited the city today was to gather some information ahead of an expected meeting next week. Our friends Mike and Rachel were due to spend the day here next Tuesday as part of a cruise on the Hebridean Sky. We’d also hoped to catch up with Neil and Caroline, who were working on the ship, and thought it would be nice to find a pleasant spot where we could meet for a drink or even lunch. As it turned out, the ship never called at the city after all, as bad weather at sea forced a change of plans.

El Charco San Ginés looked very nice. El Charco translates as ‘the puddle’ and is surrounded by dozens of restaurants serving tapas, seafood platters and other fish dishes.

We weren't particularly hungry at lunchtime, so we just had coffee and water at one of the cafes.

Afterwards, we visited the church of San Ginés.

Instead of walking all the way along the shore to the bus station at the edge of town, we found the location of the city's main bus station and walked up through the pedestrianised streets towards it. Once we got there we didn't have to wait too long before a bus turned up and we were soon on our way back to Puerto del Carmen.

Superdino, the supermarket closest to our villa (although still a bit of a climb back!) stocked some unusual crisps. These were three examples... fried egg, garlic and pizza!

Geoff prepared dinner at the villa this evening. It was warm enough to sit outside beforehand, but once the sun set, it became just a little too cool to dine outside comfortably.
