Terceira Island:
Visiting Angra do Heroísmo after docking in Praia
da Vitoria
Overnight we had sailed
94 nautical miles from Ponta Delgada, on the island of São
Miguel, to Praia da Vitoria, on the island of Terceira.
The plans for today were centred around the nearby town
of Angra do Heroísmo, where separate morning and
afternoon excursions had been arranged, returning to the
ship for lunch. |
We both went on the morning excursion
and in the afternoon, Bruce returned to Angra to do a
hike close to the town. Geoff chose to spend the afternoon
closer to the ship, exploring Praia da Vitoria independently.
This page contains all of the day's photos from Angra.
Geoff's afternoon photos are on the next page.
Waking up as the sun was rising, we were
about to enter the port. This pilot ship was drawing alongside
to allow a pilot to transfer across to our ship.

A quick photo of the
ship from the coach as we set off on our morning excursion. |
It was an easy road
journey from the port to Angra, travelling on good roads,
which must have something do with being in the European
Union. If only we could also be part of that club ...oh
...wait ...we were in that club but the nation decide to
leave it. How sad. |
We were dropped off in
the main square of Angra do Heroísmo. Our first impressions
were really good. |
We spent part of the
morning following the group and listening to our guide. |

Rumour had it that our
ship should have docked here, but that the German ship in
this photo had "stolen" our position. We didn't
know if the rumour was true, but it did make sense, given
that our activities today were both centred here and it
would have saved us four coach journeys if we had been docked
here. |

At this point, the group
was being led through the garden towards the museum, where
a visit had been arranged. We decided to go off by ourselves
and see if we could find the market instead. |
The entrance to the
market. We had managed to find it! Sadly, there wasn't much
going on here, but we did have a little look around it. |

With time to spare, we
walked to a bay at the top of the town... |
...before deciding to
sample some local delicacies (as recommended by our guide
earlier). |
It was time to return
to the ship for lunch. We passed the bullring on our way
back. |
After lunch, it was back
on the coach for Bruce and another trip to Angra. |
This plan for this afternoon
was to walk up Monte Brasil, overlooking the town and to
do a circular walk. |

There was one stage of
the walk where there was a fairly strenuous walk uphill. |

After a lovely afternoon,
we were soon on our way back to the port. Bruce wondered
how Geoff had enjoyed his afternoon in Praia da Vitoria.
