A day in Licata, Sicily
with a fine lunch ashore

Friday 30th September 2022

This was our second visit to the port of Licata. The last time we were here, in 2017, we had no time to look around the town and were driven straight from the port for a day long excursion, details of which can be found by following this link.

Today, we decided to spend the day in the town and even made a spontaneous decision to have lunch ashore, which turned out to be quite an adventure.

The port looked deserted and nobody checked us going us.

The town didn't appear to be on the tourist trail, which appealed to us.

This sign, outside a modest looking restaurant, caught our eye. We had been planning to have lunch somewhere in town. Should we take the plunge and dine here? While we were pondering, a man opened the door of the restaurant and asked if he could help us? "Do you have a table available for lunch", we asked? "Yes", he said. So we reserved it. Our minds had been made up for us! The restaurant only opened at 1:00pm and it was still mid-morning, so we continued exploring the town.

From the outside, this church was completely plain. Inside it was quite simple too. Unusual, we thought.

At 1.00 pm, we returned to the restaurant.

We struggled a bit with the menus, which were only in Italian, so it was easiest to choose one of the three tasting menus called L’Illusione (The Illusion). It was also the shortest and cheapest menu... but it wasn't cheap at €130 per person, excluding wine. They suggested a bottle for €120 but we chose another one at a mere €60!

The amuse bouche - prawn cracker and pepper stuffed with something deliciously fishy.

Pizzaiola: merluzzo all’affumicatura di pigna.
Filo crust, cod, potato and cream and pine cone smoke.

Whipped Mozzerella in a rich tomato sauce.

This dish came with a special explanation in English (see above).

Polpo “Nummari”.
Baby octopus in a fennel and crumb sauce.

Riso e Scampo
(Rice and Norwegian lobster with broken spaghetti and a spicy tomato sauce.
More if we needed it in Mama's casserole!

Tataki - Barbeque tuna and aubergine.

Predolce - the first dessert - lime sorbet.

Dolce - the second dessert - peach ice cream and cannoli.
This was the best cannoli we have ever eaten.

Caramel almonds with coffee.

The meal service began at 1:00pm and finished at 3:30pm, after which we staggered back to the port.

Back on board, we noticed the chef returning with fresh produce for the Captain's farewell meal tonight. We couldn't possibly, could we? Somehow, we did just that. We may never eat again!

We were a bit puzzled by the development on the hill (on the left), as seen from the ship.

With a bit of research, we established that they were mausolea.

At 6:00pm we sailed for Syracuse after a very pleasant day here.
