Leaving Athens and beginning our cruise.
At about 3pm we boarded our coach and waved goodbye to
the Hotel Grande Bretagne.
About forty minutes later we arrived at the port of Piraeus.

The first sighting of our ship, the Aegean Odyssey.
|
|
We checked in ashore, went
through port security and were taken to the ship on a shuttle
bus. We were to get very
attached to our passenger cards, using them to get off and
on the ship, unlock our cabins and even order drinks at
the bar. |
|
|
Our cabin number was 728A
on the Bridge deck. It was on the sunny side of the ship
and was very hot.
Where was the air-conditioning? Did we really book a cabin
so close to the funnel?
What was that strong vibration and the accompanying loud
hum?
Perhaps it would stop quite soon... |

After taking part in the mandatory life boat
drill, we went to dinner in the more formal of the ship's
two restaurants, the "Marco Polo". We had read that
we might need to wear jackets and ties in this restaurant,
but were pleased to discover that no such rule applied this
evening, or would apply for the rest of the cruise. Our dining
companions were a nice couple, one of whom shared a lot of
information about endocrine treatments for trans-gender people,
more, in fact than we thought we might ever practically need!
On the other hand, he loved opera, which pleased Geoff. We
were both pleased by the quality of the food and the service.
We were off to a good start! |
