We were staying at the Hotel
Grande Bretagne, which is centrally located on Syntagma
Square and very close to the Parliament buildings. |
We were quite tired, so we followed the local agent's
recommendation to go to a restaurant, translated as
"The Cricket and the Ant", which was close to
the hotel .
The food there was excellent and good value for money
(see right).
After eating, we took a
stroll to get our bearings. It was still very warm, but
also dry, so it didn't feel unpleasant. |
The next morning, we had
a sumptuous breakfast on the roof terrace restaurant of
the hotel, from where we got these amazing views. |
As part of our tour package,
we were booked on a morning tour, including a visit to the
Acropolis and its museum,
with the afternoon free to explore on our own. |

After visiting the Acropolis,
we walked to the museum. |
The exhibits were very interesting,
but Lord Elgin came in for a bit of a beating! |
After the museum visit,
we were taken back to the hotel in the coach, stopping to
see the stadium along the way. |
It was, by now, very hot
indeed, but Geoff braved the sun to watch the changing of
the guard at the Parliament. |

Later that afternoon, we
both set off on foot to look for the Agora, not realising
that we
would be visiting it tomorrow, anyway. Lucky that, because
when we found it, it was closed! |
Along the way, we passed the restaurant where
we had eaten the previous evening (see below)

Drinks in the elegant hotel
lounge, which was lovely after all the walking we had done. |
We booked to have dinner
and watch the sunset from the roof terrace restaurant.
We knew it would be expensive, but it had to be done! |
We were not disappointed
with the views or the food! |
We both had "cannelloni of smoked
salmon and balik, with cream cheese and guacamole"
as a starter (see above)
Bruce's main course was "baby lamb
cooked in two ways, with mashed oven potato and sweet garlic
espumá" (see above).
Geoff had "cep orecchiette
pasta".
Unfortunately the picture he took was very blurred,
so he was forced to re-create the dish once we got home.
Although he had
difficulty sourcing the ingredients, his efforts were well
rewarded (see below)! |

Finally, the bill. Quite
a contrast from the previous night, but we did not regret
it one little bit! |
