Venice - Day 5
New discoveries for us as we cover a wide area on foot

Thursday 13th November 2025

Our three-day vaporetto pass ran out this morning, so we decided to spend the day exploring Venice on foot and see how much we could fit in. It was our last full day in the city, and with so many places still left unseen, we set out simply to discover as much as we could. It turned out to be a good decision. We covered a wide area (see map), finding many things we hadn’t seen on our previous three visits, and revisiting one or two familiar spots along the way.

Edith and Gregor had decided to spend the day visiting the Venice Biennale exhibition (which specialised in architecture this year), so we made arrangements to meet them for dinner.

We began by walking towards the station and crossing Ponte delgi Scalzi, from where these photos were taken.

Church of Saint Roch (Chiesa di San Rocco).

Scuola Grande di San Rocco, next to the church in Campo San Rocco.

Church of San Pantalon - The bell tower seen from Campo San Rocco.

Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari from a different side.

Ponte San Tomà.

San Polo (church) and its detached bell tower (campanile) as seen from Campo San Polo.

Ponte Bernardo / Rio de le Do Torre.

Rio San Stae from Ponte de la Rioda.

Ponte del Savio from Ponte Ruga Vechia.

We walked for another half an hour to pay another visit to the market...

Geoff made some purchases, while Bruce kept an eye on the gull on the roof...

...and a couple of other gulls, who in turn were keeping an eye out for a potential fish grab!

Afterwards, we had some coffee at Campo Cesare Battisti nearby.

We then crossed the Rialto Bridge, from where these photos were taken.

Walking into less familiar territory once again, we arrived at Campo Santa Maria Formosa and saw the church of Santa Maria Formosa.

Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The bronze lion sculptures are part of the Venice Biennale.

Walking further east, we crossed Ponte dei Conzafelzi from where we got this view of Palazzo Tetta, built at a fork between Rio Tetta and the Rio di San Giovanni Laterano.

Before long we arrived at Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. In the foreground is the Equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni with the Scuola Grande di San Marco behind it.

Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo is one of the largest churches in the city.

The interior was well worth visiting.

Saint Vincent Ferrer Altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini.

"Adoration of the Shepherds" by Paolo Veronese, created around 1557.

Chapel of the Rosary.

Continuing our walk, we crossed the Ponte de la Panada...

...and soon arrived at the charming Campo Santa Maria Nova, where we decided it was time to have a light lunch...

...before visiting the Santa Maria dei Miracoli church nearby.

The interior was just as impressive as the exterior.

Our first gelato of the holiday(!) at Campo dei Santi Apostoli, as we made our way back to the hotel.

A view of rio di Noale as we crossed the Ponte Nicolò Pasqualigo.

Later, along with Edith and Gregor, we revisited the Il Santo Bevitore craft pub for a drink...

...before strolling on a bit further...

...to the Ristorante Vecia Cavana, where we had dined on our first night together.

We all chose different things tonight, unlike our first night when we shared a turbot. These were Geoff's choices, starting with burrata and truffles...

...seafood pasta for his main course...

...and pistacchio mousse for dessert.

Like last time, free liqueurs were offered (and accepted!)

It was another excellent meal and a lovely way to share our last evening together.
