Venice - Day 2
Edith & Gregor arrive and we do some sightseeing
Monday 10th November
2025
We awoke to a beautifully
sunny and warm day for the time of year. |
| |
Edith and Gregor had
taken a very early flight from Zurich, so after breakfast
we retraced our steps to the water bus stop where we had
arrived from the airport the day before, hoping to surprise
them and help carry their luggage to the hotel. We didn't
have long to wait before they arrived, but in the meantime,
we were fascinated by the amount of activity in the lagoon... |
| |
...including an ambulance
boat, which made a stop in front of us. |
| |
As soon as they arrived,
they spotted us and were full of smiles to see us! As it
happened, they were travelling very light and didn't need
any help with their luggage for the short walk to the hotel,
but they appreciated our intentions. |
| |
After dropping off a
few things at the hotel (it was too early for them to check
in, so they made use of our room), we walked to the Goppion
Cafe nearby, where they had a light breakfast, while we
had a cup of coffee each. |
| |
We had been consulting
our map of Venice (supplied by the hotel) to see where we
could go today with Edith and Gregor, but over coffee it
became clear that we needn't have, not today anyway, because
they are frequent visitors to the city and were keen to
guide us today. |
| |
Afterwards, we walked
to the railway station and bought a 72-hour unlimited Venice
vaporetto pass for €45 each. We put it to use immediately,
taking a vaporetto to Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s
Square). On Edith and Gregor’s recommendation, we
chose the longer route rather than the quicker journey along
the Grand Canal. The trip took about 30 minutes (highlighted
in magenta) and offered a broader glimpse of the city. |

Constitution Bridge
(Ponte della Costituzione)- a modern, arched, steel &
glass footbridge with minimalist design, spanning the Grand
Canal close to the station. |

The Molino
Stucky is a Neo-Gothic building on the western end of
Giudecca island, now home to the Hilton Hotel. |
| |
| |
The Chiesa del Santissimo
Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), commonly known
as Il
Redentore, is a 16th-century Roman Catholic church located
on Giudecca island. |

| |
| |
| |
| |
San
Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine church
on the island of the same name, designed by Andrea Palladio
built between 1566 and 1610. It is located opposite the
Piazzetta di San Marco and forms the focal point of the
view from every part of the Riva
degli Schiavoni. |
| |
After disembarking, we
walked towards Saint Mark's Square, pausing for a photo
of the Bridge
of Sighs. |

| |
Having visited the most
famous landmark in Venice, we continued walking without
having a destination in mind. |

| |
| |
Afterwards, we resumed
our exploration of the city on foot and by vaporetto, heading
more or less in the direction of our hotel. We passed by
another famous Venice landmark, the Rialto
Bridge. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
We arrived back at our
hotel by late afternoon. |
| |
| |
| |
In the evening, we set
out once again with Edith and Gregor towards the restaurant
they had booked for us. About halfway along the 20-minute
walk, we stopped at this conveniently located pub. It was
good to have friends with us who knew all the best places
to go! |
| |
| |
| |
The pub only serves beer
and gin... |
| |
...so we chose one of
each, as did Edith and Gregor. |
| |
Afterwards, we resumed
our walk to the restaurant, passing this interesting looking
shop en-route. |
| |
Ristorante Vecia Cavana,
the first of E&G's recommended restaurants... |
| |
...where the staff greeted
Edith warmly. We really liked the ambience and the friendliness
of the staff. |
| |
Bruce and Geoff chose
the salt cod starter, which was delicious. One of the main
course specials on offer was a whole turbot for four people.
We looked at one another and the decision was made. It was
superb and perfectly cooked. |
| |
| |
We decided to continue
with the specials on offer when it came to the dessert and
ordered zabaglione. We were fascinated when a man appeared
and prepared it in front of us. |
| |
| |
| |
Once again, it was perfectly
prepared and tasted amazing. |
| |
The biscuits were served
with the zabaglione. The grappa, which everyone except Bruce
had, was free. |
| |
The meal was perfect
in every respect and we all decided that we would like to
return to the restaurant before we left the city. Edith
therefore made another booking for Thursday evening. We
walked straight back to our hotel after the meal, bypassing
the pub at the halfway point! |
