From Gatwick to Piedmont
-
landing in Turin & driving to Benevello
Everything about
this holiday was well planned and executed, including departing
at a very civilised time. |
In the BA lounge
at Gatwick. |
A good place for
Bruce to do some plane-spotting. |
The flight to Turin
was very pleasant, with the on-board service up to the usual standard. |
After a cloudy departure,
the views of the Alps and the Piedmont countryside were lovely. |
The city of Turin,
as we made our final approach. |
By the time we were
out of the airport and had met our driver, the Friday afternoon
rush was underway and the motorway near the city was at
a standstill in some places. Our driver saw is as a challenge
and we had an "exciting" journey (i.e. saving
petrol by attempting to mount the back of other cars) to
our hotel. Despite this, it still took almost two hours
to get there. |
Our hotel, located
in the beautiful Langhe countryside, close to the village of Benevello. |

The gastronomic aspect
of the holiday began almost immediately with a wonderful
meal in the hotel's DaMa' restaurant, which specialises
in local and regional dishes. The full menu can be seen
here.
We actually had a reservation for the hotel's Michelin star
restaurant for the following night, but we decided to cancel
it because the standard of this restaurant was so good that
it seemed pointless. Also, the same chef cooks for both
restaurants. |
Pre-dinner spumante
and nibbles. Bruce made the mistake of asking for
prosecco. "If you wish Sir, but in this region
we prefer spumante" - suggestion accepted. |
The view from
our table. Highlights of the meal were the fish
soup and prawn risotto for Geoff. Bruce ambitiously
ordered the multi-course "seaside menu"! |
Petit fours
- by this time we were pretty full, but we managed
somehow! Tomorrow we would eat less, we said. But
would we do so? Time will tell. |
