Lipari, Aeolian Islands
plus a night time view of Stromboli

Approaching Lipari,
Aeolian Islands |

The harbour was quite
busy. |
We anchored a little
way off shore.
A local tender came out to the ship to pick us up... |
...and deposited
us in the heart of the lower town. |
A local guide met
us and led us through the little town. |
Before long,
we arrived at the town's second harbour,
where we boarded coaches for a scenic drive around the island. |
Looking back at Lipari
Castle and Lipari town, where we began our tour. |
We stopped twice
to admire the dramatic scenery. |

tour manager on the first half of the trip, with the excellent local
guide. |

Because of its volcanic
origin, the island is covered with obsidian, a naturally
occurring volcanic glass. (not the best picture - it was
taken from the coach) |
A pumice mine. Pumice
is also associated with volcanos. |
When we arrived back
in Lipari town, we decided to break away from the others,
who were going to the archaelogical museum. Instead we set
off to explore the old (upper) town for ourselves. |

Time for some light
refreshment before lunch! |
Gelato fragoli... |
...granita fragoli... |
...followed shortly
afterwards by a return to the ship... |
...and a light lunch
on board! |
Feeling stuffed,
we needed to go back into the town to get some exercise! |
We missed this little
church on our morning walk, so we went there next. |

There is always time
to do some shopping... |
...and enjoy wine
and nibbles with fellow passengers... just to keep us going! |
Bye-bye Lipari! |
Going back to the ship,
we shared the tender with the executive chef who had spent
some well deserved free time ashore. |
In the late evening,
we sailed past Stromboli... |
...and were rewarded
with a few small eruptions! |

Next stop - Catania |
