Cannes revisited
and an excursion to Monaco

Friday 3rd June 2016
Overnight, we sailed a short distance from the port of Nice and awoke to find ourselves anchored just outside Cannes.

There was nowhere for a ship of our size to dock in Cannes, so we disembarked via tender. This brought back memories of the last time we disembarked here three years ago. The sea swell was very high and we were anchored much further out to sea. Click here to see how scary that was (opens in a new tab). Luckily, the sea today was completely calm.

We chose to take the excursion to Monaco today. We were slightly puzzled when the coach drove past Nice to get there. We wondered why we hadn't stayed overnight in the port of Nice, instead of sailing and anchoring off Cannes. We assumed it must have had something to do with docking fees in Nice. Approximately ninety minutes after leaving Cannes we arrived in Monaco.

This is close to where we got off the coach, before setting off, on foot, up towards the Monte Carlo Casino.

On the way up to the Place du Casino, we walked past the "famous" (we were told) Fairmont hairpin bend. Well it sort of looked familiar but famous? I supposed it may be, but only if you are interested in motor racing.

We were offered a tour inside the Casino/Opera complex, but decided against it.

Expensive looking cars in front of the casino. Each to their own.

Whilst others did the casino tour, we had a walk around the square and the immediate vicinity.

A short distance from the casino square, we got a good view of Port Hercules, with the Prince's Palace on the hill behind it.

We walked past the back of the casino/opera complex as we went down the hill to the coach park.

We had some free time to explore the Japanese gardens, close to where the coach was parked.

The gardens brought back good memories of our trip to Japan last month.

Back on the coach, we were driven out of the Monte Carlo area to another area known as the "Rock of Monaco", from where we walked to the Cathedral and later the Palace.

Returning to Cannes, we decided not to return to the ship for lunch, because it was already quite late anyway and we wanted to explore the town.

Bruce's lunch consisted of macarons and chocolate...
...whereas Geoff treated himself to a canelé, a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard centre and a dark, thick caramelised crust.

The last time we visited Cannes, we climbed up to the castle, which meant (fortunately!) that we didn't have to do it again.

We enjoyed a pleasant evening on board the ship as the sun set over Cannes.

We remained at anchor until the early hours of the morning, before leaving for Marseille.
