Now we had another
day of sailing, this time along the Volga-Don
Canal, with over a dozen locks taking us
up from the below-sea-level Caspian to the
Sea of Azov and the Black Sea beyond.
The entrance to the canal
is marked by a huge triumphal arch and an
even bigger statue of Lenin; he peered down
on us with contempt as we passed.
After dinner that
evening, it was performance time for the passengers!
Even Geoff was persuaded to
participate!
Michael, who we met again, by
coincidence,
five years later on our Danube Cruise!
