The first of our excursions from Sevastopol was a visit
to Balaklava
Below right: A bridge at
the opening of the labyrinth of underground tunnels which
were kept top secret until quite recently
Balaklava is situated close to Sevastopol and was
a significant Greek trading centre in its early days.
In the Middle Ages, it belonged to the Genoese Empire
until it was conquered by the Turks in 1475. In the
Crimean war (1853 - 1856), it achieved a sad fame through
the victory of the allied forces over the Russians.
We toured the underground
submarine repair areas. Would we ever come out?
Thankfully we did!
We later visited the site of the famous "Charge of
the Light Brigade"
Our guide gave us her personal
rendition of "The Charge of the Light Brigade"
